What is a Humanist Funeral Ceremony?
A Humanist Funeral Ceremony is usually, but not always, conducted at a Crematorium or Burial Ground. It does not involve a Minister of Religion, makes no reference to religious concepts and yet is dignified and in accordance with the wishes of the Deceased. It is unique in being created specially for the Deceased, containing whatever elements those arranging the ceremony wish to have included.
It is usual, for example, for a segment of the Ceremony to be based on a biographical sketch of the Deceased in order that his/her life may be celebrated in an appropriate way.
Nothing will be said that will offend those with religious beliefs.
What is Involved in gathering the information required?
A visit to the family is arranged and perhaps some contact made (via Telephone, E-mail, Fax etc) with others who knew the deceased in order to get as full a picture as possible. In this way the family is made aware of the nature of the Ceremony and is able to meet the Officiant who acts in an informative and sympathetic way.
What else is included in the Ceremony?
Music, readings or contributions from friends and relatives can be included. Indeed, since the form of the Ceremony, as well as its contents, are matters to be decided by those arranging the Ceremony, almost anything is possible. As an example, Woodland Burials can be conducted by a Humanist Officiant.
Is This Service Available in My Area?
Humanist funeral ceremonies are conducted in most parts of the British Isles. The simplest way to contact a local Officiant is to log on to The British Humanist Association website. Here you will be able to find out about Humanist funeral ceremonies as well as those for Weddings and Namings. (Details below)
An indication of the uniqueness of such a Ceremony is that, included in the cost, is a printed copy of the Ceremony Text, provided for the family; this is often appreciated not only as a record of an important occasion but also because it provides a means of sending a copy to relatives or friends who have been unable to attend the funeral.
The fee is in line with the current fees charged by Ministers of Religion. Exact charges depend upon mileages involved.
